The second smallest state in Malaysia, Penang is found on the northwest coast of the island next to the Strait of Malacca. Here, there is something for everybody and all are welcomed. The state combines the cultures of the East with the imported Western ideals while at the same time managing to retain its own old world charm and traditions. Visitors to the region can relax at a choice of Penang luxury hotels in total home from home comfort after a long day sightseeing in this culturally rich domain.

During your visit here you will discover some of the most stunning beaches you are ever likely to come across. Whether taking in the drama of the sun setting over the ocean or sunbathing on its golden sands, the beaches are a must for any visitor. However, it is wise to restrict the number of your beach days in order to ensure you see the other jewels on offer.

It is advisable to pack a pair of sensible walking shoes so that you can make full use of your time here. Georgetown is another must and you'll easily spend a full day investigating its inner city. When setting off in the morning from your Penang luxury hotels just check that you are comfortably dressed. Think about your footwear and wear a loose blouse or shirt and perhaps, a sunhat. Georgetown is the pride of Penang's multicultural tapestry and truly reflects the fusion of the region's colorful heritage with culture embraced from outside. The sights and sounds of this pretty city are alive with heritage. In Georgetown you will also discover lush tropical gardens and temples that remind you that you are in the Far East. You will also find a sense of the colonial days here in the architecture and history of the many white painted, official heritage buildings.

In Air Itam, a few minutes away from Penang Hill railway station you will discover the awe inspiring Jade Emperor's Temple, known locally as Three Kong Tua. This stunning temple is dedicated in reverence to the Jade Emperor. According to Taoist beliefs, this emperor reigns in Heaven as the 'Supreme Ruler'. At 140 years old, it is the only temple dedicated solely to the emperor. On the ninth day of the New Year, according to the Chinese calendar, the temple is all but swamped by local devotees and believers as they come to pay tribute. Other visitors would be advised to avoid this time if they are to take the opportunity for quiet reflection within its humbling architecture. With its high gold red timbered ceilings and ornate carvings and its sense of vast space and tranquility the temple touches all visitors in a unique, mystical way.

Penang Hill is not simply the rail link to bring you here. It offers a magical experience in its own right. It is also known locally as Strawberry Hill on account of the efforts made by Captain Francis Light to clear the slopes for strawberry planting. This followed the captain's successful efforts to establish Penang as a colony under the British crown. The single gauge railway will now take travelers to 2,400 feet above sea level for a spectacular bird's eye view of the area. Up here, the air is pure and cool offering its own brand of refreshment.

Other local tourist attractions include the Tropical Spice Garden, unique in South East Asia. Set up to ensure the long-term future of the region's natural spices, this garden in Teluk Bahang offers visitors a taste of 'paradise on earth'. Exotic ferns intermingled with flowering plants are home to the many spices of the region. Malaysian flora here spreads over an approximate area of 3.2 acres boasting in excess of 500 plant varieties. Many visitors enjoy a cup of tea or coffee at the garden's cafe, which is located in the heart of the foliage and overlooks the sparkling blue sea.

If the Spice Garden appeals to you then you would also be strongly advised to visit the Butterfly Farm, also in Teluk Bahang. The farm is like a living museum, dedicated to thousands of fragile, colorful and delicately painted winged insects.

At the end of a long day on the beach, trekking or sightseeing you will return to your choice of Penang luxury hotels to relax and savor the local cuisine. Choose from a never ending list of curries, rich in local spices, or the mouth-watering noodle dishes such as Laksa, Char Koay Teow, or Hokkien Mee.
